ON THE CONFERENCE OF AFRICAN ULEMA,

DAKAR, 07-09 JUNE, 2010

 

I. CONFERENCE  SPONSOR

In his double capacity as Senegal’s Head of State and Current Chairman of the OIC, His Excellency President Abdoulaye WADE has decided to hold, in Dakar, two major Conferences involving Ulema (Muslim Scholars), namely:

  • The Conference of African Ulema, from 07-09 June, 2010, which will be preceded by the meeting of an International Preparatory Committee, in Dakar, on April 26, 2010;

II. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

1)  Dialogue among religions and civilizations, in accordance with the noble ideals of the everlasting message of the Prophet Mohamed (PUH);

2)  Permanent need for concerted discussion, first, at an African level, then across the Muslim world, on the challenges facing the Ummah, from a perspective that is conducive to economic, social and cultural development, based on the teachings of Islam and the immense potentialities of the Islamic Ummah, in all areas.

3)  Reasserting the Voice of Africa voice within the Ummah, through major initiatives, such as those of His Excellency President WADE, in order to mobilize, not only the OIC, through its Member States and its institutions, but also Islamic Scholars and Thinkers whose reflective and awakening role is essential.

4)  Meeting of African Ulema for a fruitful and constructive debate, aimed at highlighting the  role and  message of Islam in the dissemination of the ideals of peace, security, understanding and harmony across Africa, in particular, and throughout the world, in general;

5)  Motivating African Ulema as source of knowledge and education capable of playing a key role in Africa’s integration for the advent of the United States of Africa.

III. TOPICS OF THE CONFERENCE

  • Message of Islam and the Global Situation;
  • Islamic solidarity, as a foundation for quality partnership across the Islamic Ummah;
  • Combating Poverty, as seen by Islam
  • Islamic values and Development;
  • Islamic finance and Global economic crisis;
  • Knowledge Development and Sharing within the Islamic Ummah;

IV. CONFERENCE PANELS TOPICS

  • Islamic values and fight against poverty
  • Islamic finance and Economic development
  • The Knowledge within the Ummah
  • The Islamic message throughout a world in crisis.

V. CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

Around 230 prominent people (Ulema and Spiritual Leaders) including:

  • 2 representatives for each African OIC member country;
  • 1 representative for each African non OIC member country;
  • 41 Ex officio selected Ulema;
  • Representatives of Governmental  and Nongovernmental Islamic Organizations, etc;
  • Representatives of non African Islamic countries wishing to attend the conference.
